About the Atlas

What Philosophers Atlas is for

The Philosophers Atlas is a free guide to Western and world philosophy, written for anyone curious about the ideas that have shaped how we think. It does not assume any background in the subject.

It is built around the people, the books and the ideas. There are pages for 121 philosophers, from the early Greeks to the twentieth century, each with their life, their central ideas and where they fit among the others. Alongside them are the major works of philosophy, the schools and movements that grouped thinkers together, and the key concepts, explained in plain words.

How it is made

This site is built in WordPress, with Claude, Anthropic’s AI, as a working partner for code, research and first drafts. Nothing is published on the strength of a draft alone: the content is checked against standard references and corrected whenever an error is found.

It is free to use, with no advertising and no account needed.
