Daoism (Dao-jia)
from 350 BCE c.
The most effective action is the kind that does not force anything, and most trouble comes from arranging the world into categories and then defending them.

The claim
Wu wei — acting without forcing. The Dao cannot be named because naming divides, and what is divided is already one step from what there is.
What it held
The Daodejing opens by warning that the Dao it is about to describe is not the real one, which sets the tone for everything after. Its central image is water: soft, yielding, and the thing that wears away stone. Its central political advice is that the best ruler is barely noticed, and that laws multiply crime by creating categories of it.
Zhuangzi is a different writer and arguably the better philosopher. He argues from perspective rather than by assertion. The famous butterfly dream is not mysticism but an epistemological point: from inside, waking and dreaming are symmetrical, and any criterion you offer to distinguish them is offered from one side. His usefulness-of-the-useless stories make the same move about value — the tree nobody cuts down lives to be enormous.
What unites them is a suspicion of fixed distinctions. Right and wrong, useful and useless, self and other are not found in the world; they are imposed, and then people fight about them. Wu wei is what acting looks like once you stop insisting on your categories — the cook whose blade never dulls because it goes where the joints already are.
How it argued
Paradox, parable and deliberate refusal of definition, on the view that a definition is already a distortion of what it names.
What it was arguing against
Confucian ritual and moral instruction, which Daoists say produce the very artificiality they claim to correct; and Mohist utility calculations.
Where it disagreed with itself
Whether Laozi existed. Whether philosophical Daoism and the later religious tradition are one thing or two, which Western scholarship separated more sharply than Chinese sources do.
Common misconceptions
That wu wei means passivity. The examples are all of skilled action — a cook, a swimmer, a wheelwright — performed so well it looks effortless. It is the opposite of doing nothing.
How it began
Texts of uncertain authorship from the Warring States, when the failure of active statecraft to produce order was daily visible.
What became of it
Living, as philosophy, as religion, and as an aesthetic that shaped Chinese poetry and painting completely.
Lasting influence
Chan and Zen Buddhism are Daoism meeting Madhyamaka. Chinese landscape painting and poetry are unimaginable without it. Its Western reception has been enthusiastic and frequently inaccurate.
Why it still matters
Skill acquisition and expertise research keeps arriving at descriptions of flow that read as glosses on Zhuangzi's cook.
Put another way
Water, which goes to the low places everyone avoids and outlasts the rock.
Where to start
Zhuangzi, the inner chapters. Better philosophy than the Daodejing and far more enjoyable.
The surprising bit
Zhuangzi's response to his wife's death was to sit drumming on a pot and singing, and when reproached he explained that he had grieved, then thought about it, and stopped.
In their own words
The Dao that can be told is not the eternal Dao.
Am I a man dreaming I am a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming I am a man?

The verdict
The tradition that argued against argument and did it better than most of its opponents.
