The claim

Threefold truth: things are empty, provisionally real, and both at once — the middle. And three thousand realms are contained in a single moment of thought.

What it held

Chinese Buddhists faced a problem their Indian counterparts did not. Scriptures arrived out of order, over centuries, contradicting each other, all claiming to be the Buddha's word. Zhiyi's solution was to arrange them as a pedagogical sequence: the Buddha taught different things at different stages to different audiences, and apparent contradiction is a record of that teaching order rather than of error.

The metaphysics is more original than the classification. Madhyamaka gives two truths, conventional and ultimate. Zhiyi adds a third that is not a compromise: emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle which holds both without cancelling either. Each is complete and each includes the other two.

From that comes the doctrine of mutual inclusion — three thousand realms in one thought-moment. Every state of existence, from hell to buddhahood, is present in any moment of experience. This is not metaphor; it is the claim that no realm is separable from any other.

The most disturbing consequence, which Zhiyi accepted, is that evil is inherent in buddha-nature. A buddha does not lack the capacity for evil; he simply does not act on it — which is why he can understand it.

How it argued

Doctrinal classification of the whole canon, combined with a detailed manual of meditation practice — Zhiyi wrote the most systematic meditation instructions in Chinese Buddhism.

What it was arguing against

Rival classification schemes, and Chan's dismissal of textual study.

Where it disagreed with itself

Whether buddha-nature includes evil, which split Tiantai internally and horrified other schools. Whether inanimate objects have buddha-nature — Tiantai said yes.

Common misconceptions

That doctrinal classification is a bureaucratic exercise. It is an argument about how a canon can be both authoritative and inconsistent, and every scriptural religion faces the same problem.

How it began

Zhiyi on Mount Tiantai in the sixth century, working with a canon that had arrived in China in no order at all.

What became of it

Living. Transmitted to Japan as Tendai, where it became the school from which almost every later Japanese Buddhist founder emerged.

Lasting influence

Japanese Buddhism entirely — Honen, Shinran, Dogen and Nichiren were all trained at the Tendai centre on Mount Hiei before founding their own schools.

Why it still matters

The claim that all states are inherent in every moment, including the ones we would rather exclude, is a serious position about moral psychology as well as metaphysics.

Put another way

A lotus, which contains its seed while it is still flowering — the image the school takes from its central sutra.

Where to start

A modern account of the threefold truth and the classification scheme. The primary texts are vast.

The surprising bit

Zhiyi held that buddha-nature includes evil, so that a buddha retains the capacity for it. The doctrine was designed to explain how a buddha can understand a wrongdoer at all.

In their own words

Three thousand realms in a single moment of thought.

Zhiyi, Great Calming and Contemplation

The verdict

The most systematic attempt anywhere to make an inconsistent canon coherent without discarding any of it.
