Yin and yang

Luoyang and Huayin: the same compass direction, opposite names, because what is recorded is the light.

Yin and yang

Complementary and interdependent aspects whose alternation constitutes change - never two forces, and never fixed to anything.

In plain terms

The two characters mean the shady side of a hill and the sunny side. That is the whole idea, and everything else follows from taking it seriously.

Notice what the hill example rules out. Neither side is good or bad. Neither exists without the other - a hill with no shaded slope is not a hill. Neither is a substance; they are aspects of one thing seen from different positions. And crucially, they swap: the slope that is shaded in the morning is sunlit by afternoon, without anything having been added or removed.

So yin and yang are not forces in a contest, and nothing is inherently either. They are a way of describing how a single situation carries its own alternation, which is why the vocabulary attaches to seasons, breathing, tides and dynasties as readily as to hillsides.

As a philosopher would put it

The pair is relational and never absolute. A thing is yin or yang only relative to something else and in some respect: a hand is yang relative to the body's interior and yin relative to the sun. This is what distinguishes the scheme from dualism, in which the two terms are fixed and typically opposed in value.

Four properties are standardly identified: opposition, interdependence, mutual consumption and mutual transformation. The last is the one that matters most - each converts into the other at its extreme, which is why the scheme describes cycles rather than balances held still.

The systematic version belongs to Zou Yan's Yin-Yang school and is absorbed into the Yijing commentaries, into the correlative cosmology of the Han, and into medicine and statecraft. Its philosophical work is to make change intelligible without invoking a first cause: alternation needs no external mover, since each phase generates the conditions of the next.

Where you meet it

Chinese place names still record the original meaning. Luoyang, one of the oldest capitals, sits on the sunlit north bank of the Luo river. Huayin sits on the shaded north face of Mount Hua. Hanyang, Shenyang, Jiangyin, Huaiyin - dozens of cities carry a compass position encoded as light.

The convention is exact and it inverts between the two cases. North of a river is yang, because a river runs in a valley and the north bank catches the sun. North of a mountain is yin, because the mountain shades it. The same word, the same direction, opposite assignments, and no inconsistency: what is being named is the light, not the direction.

A thousand years of cartography and administration therefore run on a distinction that is relational by construction. Nothing on the map is yin in itself. It is yin with respect to something, and the name records which.

What is actually disputed

Whether the scheme explains anything or only redescribes.

The objection is that a framework in which everything has both aspects, and either can transform into the other, cannot be contradicted by any observation - which makes it a vocabulary rather than a theory. Applied to medicine or cosmology it can accommodate any outcome after the fact, and a scheme that cannot fail is not doing explanatory work.

The defence is that this misidentifies the kind of thing it is. Correlative thinking organises phenomena into patterns of relation rather than into causes, and demanding falsifiable predictions from it is applying a standard drawn from a different project. What is genuinely disputed inside the tradition is narrower: how far the Han correlative systems, which mapped yin and yang onto the five phases and thence onto colours, organs, directions and dynasties, were an elaboration of the idea or a bureaucratic ossification of it.

Commonly confused with

  • good and evil Neither term carries value. Yin is not the bad half, and reading the pair as a moral opposition is the commonest Western error about it.
  • masculine and feminine One correlation among dozens in the Han system, and not a definition. Taking it as the core meaning imports a fixity the concept does not have.

Defined against

  • Essence Nothing is yin or yang in itself. The assignment holds only relative to a comparison, which is a denial that either is an intrinsic nature

Philosophers

  • Laozi The reversal of opposites, in the text that made the vocabulary current
  • Zhuangzi Alternation without a fixed standpoint from which to judge either side
  • Zhu Xi Where the pair is folded into the li and qi framework

The characters name the shaded and sunlit slopes of a hill and are attested long before any theory; the systematic use as a general account of change belongs to the Warring States period.
